Bring Rachel Zegler to the Oscars

A true West Side Story star is ready to rumble for Rachel Zegler.

The 20-year-old actress, who played Maria in the revival film, announced Monday that despite the Steven Spielberg-directed musical, she was not invited to the 2022 Oscars and was nominated seven times at the awards show.

But Russ Tamblyn – who played Riff in the 1961 adaptation of the Broadway play – isn’t happy about the decline of the invitation.

“@TheAcademy As a voting member and original riff, I want to say it’s your duty to get Rachel a seat at the Oscars,” Tamblyn, 87, tweeted on March 21st.

“She STARS in #Westsidestory, which is nominated across the board. When they say representation matters, that’s what they mean. Please please her,” he continued.

Tamblyn tweeted his thoughts in response to a Los Angeles Times report to Zegler’s snub.

Zegler – who won the Golden Globe for her role this year – revealed on Instagram earlier this week that she was not asked to attend the 94th Academy Awards this Sunday after a fan asked her if she was planning on dating to wear to the event.

The singer replied, “I’m not invited, so my boyfriend’s sweatpants and flannel.”

“Idk y’all, I’ve tried everything but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” Zegler continued. “I will be cheering on West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we did so tirelessly 3 years ago.”

She added: “I’m hoping for a last minute miracle and a personal celebration of our film, but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes I guess. Thanks for all the shock and outrage – I’m disappointed too. But that’s ok. so proud of our film.”

West Side Story was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director for Spielberg, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography.

DeBose, who played Anita in the film, vaguely tweeted her reaction to Zegler’s non-invitation.

After fans asked on the social media platform what she thought of the issue, she said wrote, “I only see what you are referring to. I tweet in general and it has nothing to do with it. But thanks for bringing this to my attention.”

Zegler further talked about her feelings on the subject on March 20, he wrote: “Oh my gosh folks!! appreciate all the support, i really do. We’re living in such unprecedented times, and there’s a lot of work behind the scenes to make movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I’m fortunately shooting in London right now)… and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and I get off my phone x R.
