With all of the iconic roles Cate Blanchett has taken on over the years, it’s hard to imagine how she has time to raise her four children, but the ‘Disclaimer’ actor and her husband Andrew Upton, who has been an actress for almost 25 years Producer has always made parenting a key priority. With three sons – Dashiell, Roman and Ignatius – and their daughter Edith, the couple has their hands full. Blanchett previously opened up about the difficulties of balancing her career with motherhood in a 2016 interview with Britain’s Evening Standard.

“The film industry is no different from any other industry. It’s a struggle for working parents,” she told the outlet. “Whether you’re making your second film or trying to make your first feature film, time is of the essence. So anything that can give you time, whether it’s through child care or up to the second draft, and allows you to take the time to develop things slowly [has to be welcomed].”

In a 2020 interview with Extra TV, she also said, “… knowing myself as a working mom who identifies as a feminist, it’s a constant juggling of following your personal, professional passion and trying to indulge and to serve your family.” And somehow Blanchett manages it all.

Blanchett and Upton’s first child, Dashiell John Upton, was born on December 3, 2001. Though the actress doesn’t often talk about or appear publicly with her children for reasons of privacy, during an episode of “A Podcast of One’s Own With Julia Gillard,” she did reveal that her then 18-year-old would soon be starting film school , although she didn’t mention which institution he attends.

Roman Robert Upton

Blanchett and Upton’s second eldest son, Roman Robert Upton, was born on April 23, 2004. Roman has made some rare red carpet appearances with his famous mother, such as at the 2012 Helpmann Awards in Sydney and the 2018 SIHH show in Geneva. but just like his siblings, she keeps him out of the limelight.

Ignatius Martin Upton

Born on April 13, 2008, Ignatius “Iggy” Martin Upton is Blanchett and Upton’s youngest son and biological child. At just 6 days old, he made his big public debut with his mother at the Australia 2020 Summit, per People. Iggy also attended the 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in 2014 and the UK premiere of Ocean’s 8 in 2018, and he even landed a cameo in his mother’s film of the year Thor: Ragnarok 2017

Edith Vivian Patricia Upton

In March 2015, Blanchett and Upton welcomed a newborn girl through adoption who they named Edith Vivian Patricia Upton, People reported. During a November 2015 conversation with Women in the World’s Tina Brown, Blanchett said the decision to adopt was one she and her husband pondered for 14 years before finally bringing Edith home. “I felt like we had room, enough emotional space in our hearts, and were privileged enough to be able to have another child, so it wasn’t about biology,” she explained, per the Daily Mail. “It wasn’t about wanting to have a girl — the gender of the kids was never particularly important to me.” Though Edith hasn’t walked the red carpet with her mom yet, all we know is that she’ll impress when she does does.
