Coleen Rooney slams Rebekah Vardy in ‘treason’ libel suit

British footballer Coleen Rooney accused another player’s wife Rebekah Vardy of cheating on her by leaking fabricated stories to the tabloids as the duo’s high-profile libel battle began on Tuesday.

Rooney, who is married to former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, is being sued by Vardy in London’s High Court after calling her on Instagram about the alleged leaks.

“The essence of this case is treason,” said Ronney’s attorney, David Sherborne, upon opening the written submissions early in the trial, the LBC reported.

In court, Rooney’s attorney claimed Vardy was “responsible for her regularly abusing her status as a trusted follower [Rooney’s] personal Instagram account by secretly informing The Sun about it [Rooney’s] private posts and stories.”

Rooney has said she tried to smother the leaker by deliberately publishing false stories over a period of several months. Finally, Rooney said she blocked all but one of Vardy’s accounts from her Instagram Stories. When these stories appeared in The Sun, Rooney announced to her followers that Vardy was responsible.

Vardy, who is married to Leicester City player Jamie Vardy, has vehemently denied the allegations.

Her lawyer, High Tomlinson, said Vardy wanted to “defend her reputation” after being hit with “false allegations”.

He said Vardy and her family were “exposed to abuse and threats” and “taunted and verbally abused at football games” and “joking endlessly” over the allegations, the Standard reported.

Vardy’s attorney told the court there was “no irrefutable evidence” that she was the person behind the leaks.

“Mrs. Rooney accused Mrs. Vardy of betraying her and her friends and family by disclosing this private information. That allegation was false, Mrs. Vardy had not done so,” her attorney said.

Under English defamation law, Rooney and her legal team must successfully prove that their story about Vardy was “substantially true”.

Even if Coleen’s legal team successfully carries out his case, The Times reports that she may still have to foot the bill for some of the legal costs.

Meanwhile, if Rebekah emerges victorious, she could be awarded meager damages.
