Don McLean is retiring from his NRA appearance after a school shooting in Texas

Goodbye, Mr. “American Pie.”

In the wake of Tuesday’s deadly mass shooting in Texas, “American Pie” singer Don McLean announced that he will no longer be performing at this year’s National Rifle Association (NRA) convention in Houston.

“In light of recent events in Texas, I have decided that it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to represent the NRA at their convention in Houston this week,” the 76-year-old rock star said in a statement reported to Fox News. “I’m sure all the people planning to attend this event are also shocked and disgusted by these events. After all, we are all Americans.”

McLean added, “I share the grief of this terrible, cruel loss with the rest of the nation.”

The “Vincent” singer was one of several artists scheduled to take the stage at the Friday convention; others were Lee Greenwood, Larry Gatlin and Danielle Peck, TMZ reported. So far, the rest of the musicians are still slated to perform at the three-day Firearms Festival, which the event’s website reportedly “will showcase the latest weapons and equipment across 35 acres.”

Former President Donald Trump, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will also appear at the event.

The annual Friday gathering is just a four-hour drive from Uvalde, where Tuesday’s fatal shooting took place.

The convention comes four days after Tuesday’s massacre in which an 18-year-old gunman – who has since been identified as Salvador Ramos from Uvalde – opened fire at Robb Primary School, killing 19 students and four teachers before being shot by him was shot by police.

In light of the tragedy, gun control advocates are urging Texas officials to move the NRA conference out of the state.
