‘Friends’ and ‘Somebody, Somewhere’ actor Mike Hagerty has died aged 67

Character actor Mike Hagerty, who played memorable roles on Friends and Somebody, Somewhere, has died. He was 67.

His cause of death was not released, but a statement was shared on social media by Bridget Everett, his “Somebody, Somewhere” co-star.

“It is with great sadness that the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles,” Everett posted on Instagram on Friday.

She continued, “A beloved character actor, his love for his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life.”

“Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn, and his sister, Mary Ann Hagerty [and] her wife Kathleen O’Rourke and their daughter Meg. He will be greatly missed,” she wrote.

Hagerty was best known for playing the construction manager Mr. Treeger on the ’90s NBC sitcom Friends.

In the HBO comedy Somebody, Somewhere, Hagerty portrayed farmer Ed Miller, Everett’s character’s father.

Throughout his career he has appeared in a variety of television series including guest appearances on Boston Legal, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cheers, Community, CSI, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, “Glee”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Happy Ends”, “Shameless”, “Seinfeld” and many more.

He stayed true to the sitcom genre with regular roles on Fox’s The George Carlin Show (1994) and HBO’s Lucky Louie, which premiered in 2006.

Many fans took to social media to express their sadness over Hagerty’s death. ABC-7 reporter Richard Roeper wrote, “Sad to hear of the death of Second City star and character actor Mike Hagerty, who recently starred as the father in ‘Somebody Somewhere’ on @HBO. Mike had the classic Chicago mustache and accent and a natural on-screen presence. He always came to play.”

“No. No no no. Oh horrible loss and k will miss him on your show. Heartbreaking. Admired him for years. X,” Sarah Jessica Parker wrote on Instagram.

Sean Masterson, comedian from the second city of Chicago added, “RIP Mike Hagerty. Funny, cute and a total pro. Thank you for the decades of laughter.”

“You may not have known his name, but there’s a very, very good chance he’s been in one of your favorite things because he’s been in pretty much everything and never struck a wrong note. REST IN PEACE. #mikehagerty”, one user called.

“Mike Hagerty stood up for every scene he was in, but he did it with a generous Midwestern humility. What a loss. RIP”, another user tweeted.
