‘Jurassic Park’ stars Laura Dern and Sam Neill open up a romance between their 20s and 20s

Laura Dern and Sam Neill didn’t think much of their characters falling in love on screen in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 sci-fi hit Jurassic Park.

However, nearly 30 years later, the two realized that their 20-year age difference — she was 23 to his 42 — probably wasn’t the best of ideas.

Dern, 55, and Neill, 74, discussed their romance portrayed in ‘Jurassic Park’ with The Sunday Times and revealed their feelings have changed over the years.

“I’m 20 years older than Laura! Which was a perfectly reasonable age difference for a leading man and a leading lady at the time,” said the Tudors star.

Dern and Neill both reprise their roles as paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler and paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion.

The New Zealand native then revealed the moment he knew the relationship wasn’t “entirely appropriate”.

Dern was only 23 when she filmed the dinosaur action-adventure in the early ’90s, and 26 when the film finally hit theaters. Neill was in his forties at the time of filming.

“It never crossed my mind until I opened a magazine and there was an article called ‘Old Knackers and Girls.’ People like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery play with much younger people,” Neill continued. “And there I was, on the list. I thought, ‘Come on. This can not be true.'”

The Marriage Story star agreed with Neil’s comments, noting, “Well it felt totally appropriate to fall in love with Sam Neill.”

The Oscar winner added, “And it’s only now, as we’re coming back in a moment of cultural awareness of patriarchy, I’m like, ‘Wow! We’re not the same age?’”

Dern also wanted to ensure that her character in the new sequel focuses less on her age and more on female representation on screen.

She explained that Ellie should be put in the same box as Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley from the Alien movies. Both characters changed and changed the way viewers view female Hollywood action heroes.

“It’s really moving,” she said. “Many women in engineering and science point to a similarity between Ellie’s heroism and women in her field.”

Jeff Goldblum also returns as Dr. Ian Malcom back to Jurassic World. In the mother film he portrayed the bare-breasted mathematician of chaos theory. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are also joining the ensemble film, reprising their roles from the previous two Jurassic World films.

Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters on June 10th.
