She is a barbie girl in a barbie world.
The highly-anticipated live-action film opens in theaters in July 2023, with Margot Robbie playing the iconic puppet alongside a star-studded cast, reports Variety.
In a 2021 interview, the 31-year-old Australian actress said taking on a live adaptation “comes with a lot of baggage. . . and many nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”
“People generally hear ‘Barbie,’ and they’re like, ‘I know what this movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing the screenplay, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I know ‘t.’ ”
Warner Bros. shared the first look of the Little Women director’s new film via a tweet during a presentation at Las Vegas CinemaCon on Tuesday.
The cast includes a number of A-listers, including Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, and a few others.
Production on the film began in early 2022. The film was co-written by Gerwig, known for projects such as “Lady Bird” and Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story”), with the film being directed by Gerwig.
Barbie is currently one of several live-action adaptations from toy brand Mattel. Other upcoming projects will be inspired by Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Magic 8 Ball and Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots, among others.
Barbie and her bright pink convertible is slated to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
