Oscars protests are brewing just days before the 2022 ceremony

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is preparing for possible protests during the 2022 Academy Awards on Sunday.

This year’s show has drawn much controversy – from removing presentation from eight of the 23 categories during the live broadcast to not requiring presenters and cast members to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccinations. Instead, according to TMZ, they must present two negative PCR tests on the day of the ceremony.

But it seems that not airing makeup, hair, sound and other categories is a sticking point for Tinseltown.

Cinema Audio Society President Karol Urban confirmed, according to Thursday’s Deadline, that there is a game plan for guests to wear their guild badges backwards during Sunday’s show.

Another part of the strategy is for the winners to flip their Oscars as they take the stage to receive them during the ceremony.

“There are a variety of different organizations working together to find ways to prevent their voices from being cut off,” said Urban, who tops the list for mixer performances.

She continued, “As the Oscars draw closer, more and more artisans are showing solidarity. If anything positive comes out of this very horrific situation this year, it is that as the day approaches, we become stronger and stronger.”

“We all had faith that the Academy would celebrate all filmmakers,” Urban said.

Insiders told the publication the whispers of protest began when members of Hollywood’s sound department learned about the categories the Oscars won’t be showing during the broadcast.

Sound, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design and Documentary Short, Animated Short and Live Action Short are the categories presented during the pre-show. These segments are then edited and shown briefly in the final broadcast.

Urban said the pre-show recording “cuts down on category votes” because they know they’re going to be “moderated and trimmed and capped.”

“I find it annoying that it’s not live in front of a full audience of like-minded people,” she added. “We don’t get that applause of support from the entire community of equal filmmakers. This is very heartbreaking.”

As for the protest, the idea is spreading to other boisterous categories beyond the Sound nominees, including the minds behind “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time To Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and ” West”. side story.”

Another source told Deadline: “It’s not an organized thing. It’s word of mouth. People talk about wearing their Academy pins inside out and holding their Oscar statuettes inside out when they win one. Some will definitely go there, some won’t. It’s spreading. It gets some currency.”

Two Academy members — four-time Academy Award nominee Peter Kurland and Academy Award-winning Martin Scorsese collaborator Tom Fleischman — have left the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the proposal, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

As for COVID-19 concerns, some A-listers are keen to attend the awards show but are nervous about getting tested, TMZ reported Friday.
