Next year’s Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 13, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Friday.
The date for the 95th Academy Awards pushes the show back from this year when they were held unusually late on March 27, partly due to the Olympics in February. But it will also leave behind an extended awards season that some have argued is eroding the drama’s Oscars.
The 94th Academy Awards had no shortage of that, although not in the film academy sense. On a night when Apple TV+’s “CODA” became the first film with a largely deaf cast and the first film on a streaming service to win Best Picture, Will Smith’s infamous slap in the face to host Chris Rock overshadowed the awards.
Smith has since resigned from the academy, which banned the actor from attending the Oscars for 10 years.
ABC will broadcast the ceremony again next year.
